About

Campcraft Australia

We are about creating ways to promote outdoor experiences. Whether you’re a first time camper or a seasoned outdoorer (yes, we’re making this a word), we aim to create valuable experiences and resources to compliment your time in nature.

It’s not surprising that time in nature is good for us. We have personally experienced first hand on many occasions the benefits of spending time outdoors, whether that’s an afternoon stroll through the park, a strenuous multi-day hike, prolonged immersion with minimal food, or simply camping with loved ones down by the beach. But it’s not only good for yourself individually, it’s great for your relationships with others also. Nature has a way of enabling genuine, authentic interactions with those around us that other environments can fall short of doing.

We feel that good times with friends and family out in nature are the best of times and it is our aim to help facilitate more of these experiences in people’s lives. Our workshops are designed to create a space for people from all different backgrounds to come together to connect, communicate and learn together.

In addition we’ve leaned on our experience as parents and created NaturePost, a mail-based, monthly subscription letter that helps get kids outdoors and unearth nature’s hidden wonders.

Campcraft Australia is also in the process of creating a home education resource package that can compliment a child’s inherent curiosity to learn and engage with nature.

Nero

Owner & Outdoor Advocate

Growing up as an active kid in the country, Nero always had a fondness for time spent outdoors. However the birth of his son Lockie was a turning point in many ways (and not just because of the new phenomenon of being a new parent) as it brought about a conscious choice by both himself and partner Jen to spend more time in nature raising their boy. This decision sparked a new chapter of outdoor discovery, learning and experiences for the family. Nero personally undertook study and training in the areas of bushcraft, survival and traditional skills. This included attending specialised courses run by some of the top teachers in Australia and he quickly developed a deep love and passion for these subjects. This passion caught the attention of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA) and in 2021 Nero joined the company where he helped to facilitate over 30 courses and taught lessons on a variety of subjects. The forever student, during this time Nero also continued to attend courses with other outdoor companies to further his knowledge and skill. This period resulted in large amounts of time outdoors and a massive expanse in his experience, but as a byproduct, it also meant a significant part of this was spent away from his family. In mid 2023 Nero made the transition away from BSA to start spending more time with his partner Jen, son Lockie and to establish Campcraft Australia. This next chapter builds upon Nero’s extensive experience and everlasting love and passion for all things outdoors, but in a different, yet complimentary approach to the past.

Nero also has experience in the Canadian Winter Wilderness. Here he partakes in expeditions and courses and has the amazing opportunity to work alongside the incredible Dave and Kielyn Marrone from Lure of the North.

The journey of learning, sharing, and teaching continues for Nero through Campcraft Australia and he welcomes you all to be a part of it.

Jen

Owner/Arts & Craft Superhero

If we had to wait for Jen to write her own bio, we would all still be waiting, so here it is, written unbiasedly by Nero.

If arts and craft were a superpower, Jen would have it. Whether its carving, weaving, parcel wrapping or anything else, her ability to quickly learn a new skill and then turn around and immediately produce quality work is nothing short of amazing (if not slightly disheartening for the rest of us mortals). One of Jen’s many talents is wood carving, creating beautiful spoons and spatulas that she takes pleasure in giving as gifts to others. Another superpower (and the one Jen is most known for) is her drawings. Along with creating amazing graphite pencil art (check them out on her personal instagram) Jen is the creative talent and skill behind the beautiful drawings that accompany each of our NaturePost subscription packages.

Bringing it back to nature, one of Jen’s favourite things to do is spend time with her boys out bush and by the beach. Growing up on the coast, the ocean always sung to her heart, and throughout her schooling years, she would always rather be (and was) at the beach rather than in class. A childhood of outdoors rather than lessons did nothing to stem her learning though, as Jen went on to become a successful revenue manager for a multinational hotel chain before embracing her passion in all things reading and literature to become the driving force behind opening our secondhand bookstore, The Nook Yamba, located on the North Coast NSW.

Arts, craft, books and more doesn’t mean that Jen is a stranger to hard work and getting her hands dirty. Despite her busy schedule, the loveable Jen still takes time out to continue to further her outdoor journey and development by attending courses run by other providers.

Lockie

Owner, Son & Lego Builder

It was through animals that Lockie first fell in love with nature. Rockin’ a khaki outfit and green cap, as a young boy Lockie was a Steve Irwin inspired, avid Wildlife Warrior through and through. Trips to the zoo, and even whole holidays were planned around nurturing his interest in all things fauna. Now, even though he has long outgrown his outfit and is on the verge of teenagehood, Lockie’s interests in nature continue on, and it’s not just about animals either. Along with Hiking, Archery and guerrilla weed control, Lockie’s outdoor activities also involve playing with rocks, discovering and working with natural clay, and also that age-old, quintessential childhood activity of finding, collecting and playing with sticks. After exploring all day, one of Lockie’s favourite pastimes is coming back to camp, lighting and taking care of the fire and sitting around looking up at the stars (especially if there’s campfire pizza to be had as well).

The approach to always being homeschooled has meant that Lockie has always had plenty of opportunity to spend copious amounts of time delving into his interests and spending time in the outdoors. It doesn’t mean that he’s not in favour of a good movie night, but what it does mean is that no matter where his future lies, there will always be that bond with nature and a foundation of a childhood spent outdoors.
